The aim of the 42nd IUPAC congress is to reflect the breadth if the chemical sciences, highlighting the impact of our science and exciting innovations with an overall focus on ‘Chemistry Solutions’. Themes will overlap in several places and the programme has been designed to be accessible and relevant to all.

On behalf of IUPAC, the RSC is delighted to host this edition of the series. The 2009 congress follows its lead with a programme that addresses the important challenges facing both the chemical sciences and society today such as climate change, energy, sustainability and healthcare.

RSC members, groups and networks have contributed a wealth of ideas to make this the biggest UK chemistry conference for several years. As well as a programme including more than 50 symposia, we are planning a series of social and satellite events to enhance networking and discussion opportunities. Combined with a large poster session and scientific exhibition showcasing the latest developments from around the world, this will be a conference to remember.

The congress will be formally opened with a welcome address on the evening of Sunday 2 August. One of Scotland’s most senior scientific and business figures, Sir Tom McKillop (Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland and former CEO of Astrazeneca) will deliver the welcome address.

These questions form the basis of this year’s conference, “Make/Think,” which will explore the ways that designers focus both on making beautiful things and thinking about problems strategically, and how those two roles interact. Scores of presentations and breakout sessions will stimulate every attendee across the range of disciplines and interests pursued by today’s designers.

The AIGA Design Conference is a biennial gathering of the design community to celebrate design excellence, reinforce friendships and connections and stimulate thinking about the critical issues that surround design practice.

The Pittsburgh Conference released the Call for Papers and the Call for Topics (Conferee Networking Sessions) for Pittcon 2009, the 60th annual Pittcon Conference and Exposition which will be held March 8—13, 2009, McCormick Place South, Chicago, Illinois.

Call for Papers
The Program Committee solicits abstracts of original, previously unpublished findings in all aspects of instrumental analysis including but not limited to chromatography, molecular and atomic spectroscopy, electrochemistry, mass spectrometry and lab-on-a-chip technology. The Committee also seeks abstracts addressing novel applications of measurement science in areas such as nanotechnology, biomedicine, neurochemistry, genomics, forensics, informatics and quality assurance as well as pharmaceutical, environmental, polymer and food science.

For full consideration, abstracts must be received by August 15, 2008. Abstracts may only be submitted electronically via the Technical Program link at www.pittcon.org.

Call for Topics
The Pittsburgh Conference is requesting topics for its expanding Conferee Networking Sessions. The submission deadline is July 18, 2008, and all topics may be submitted online. Selections will be completed by September 5, 2008, and will then be posted to the Pittcon website (www.pittcon.org under the Conferee Networking tab). Attendees interested in participating are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible because sessions have been reported to fill up quickly.

The 2008 Annual Conference will explore the boundaries of competition policy, and the appropriate balance between regulation and competition, both in general terms and using examples from particular sectors. The object of the conference is to use insights from leading economists, legal scholars and political scientists to understand where the application of competition policy is constrained or may need to be tempered. Similarly it will identify how other objectives may be affected by the application of competition policy.

Submissions are invited for presentations, workshops, and BoFs. These must be received by 23 May 2008.  Submissions for posters and live demonstrations are also invited and must be received by 15 August.
