18th World Congress of Environmental Journalists

Sri Lanka will become the global buzz on environmental issues when the 18th APFEJ World Congress of Environmental Journalists ceremonially begins on 19th October 2009, for which over 100 delegates and other environmentally-concerned officials and private individuals are expected to be flying in from nearly 50 countries world over. It will rivet around the theme of “Educate to End Climate Poverty”. The congress which is supported by the Sri Lanka Government, United Nations Environment Program and several development agencies, will deal with the role of media concerning environment this century.

The 18th World Conference of Environmental Journalists will bring established and aspiring reporters, writers and environmental communicators from around the world to debate, network, develop their professional skills and report on the latest advances in environment and climate change. Environmental journalists have a vital role to play in informing millions of people around the world about the latest advances and controversies in environmental and Climate Change. Organizers welcome journalists, editors and environmental communicators, NGO activists, Government and UN officials and media professionals such as educationist, film makers, authors and scientists in education and research across the globe from both developed and emerging countries to enjoy exciting programme of events, share experiences, develop new contacts and report great stories.

“Some of the sessions will look at the possible outcomes of the UN summit on Climate Change(COP 15) in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009 in Consultation and cooperation with other partners” revealed Dharman Wickremaratne - Director, Sri Lanka Environmental Journalists Forum (SLEJF) which co-organizes the Congress, together with Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists (APFEJ) and the Commonwealth Environmental Journalists Association (CEJA). “This congress is very important for the Pacific Region because it will focus on topics that will help environmental journalists understand small islands issues better” said APFEJ Pacific Director Nina Ratulele, Fiji.

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka in association with the Ministries of Indigenous Medicine, Export Development & International Trade, Enterprise Development & Investment Promotion, Industrial Development and Tourism and the Department of Ayurveda, has taken the leadership to gear up an international event “Ayurveda 2009″ for the second time, the foremost international exhibition and symposium on indigenous healthcare in Sri Lanka and will be supported by other Ministries, Universities, Government and Private Sector ayurvedic organizations. The event has already been officially launched by hoisting the flag with a pride of Sri Lankan healthcare tradition. The exhibition and symposium will be opened from 23rd May to 25th May 2009 at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

The fact is that Ayurveda is a future system of medicine. Future of healthcare is Ayurveda. The nature friendly medical systems like Ayurveda are getting more and more popular in the world today. “Ayurveda 2009” is organized with that futuristic vision. Today world is getting out from chemical myth to natural herbs. With all negative outcomes of recession, western society is turning towards traditional medicine. Environmental pollution has pushed the developed countries to step on our earth for nature’s blessings. “Ayurveda 2009” is the ideal rehearsal for that. It is an exclusive showcase for Sri Lankan Ayurvedic industry.

The symposium will be organized on broader theme and eminent scholars from the countries like India, UK, Japan, and Germany have been invited to join with Sri Lankan experts. Most recent advancements and scientific findings in Ayurveda will be discussed and presented at the symposium. This also will be a golden opportunity for the knowledge-seeking Ayurvedic practitioners and other professionals to share their experiences.

“Ayurveda 2009” is especially geared for the following – foreign investors, exhibitors to showcase their products and services, manufacturers of Ayurvedic/Siddha/Unani & Homeopathy products, manufacturers of medical equipment, hospitals, exporters & importers of ayurvedic products, professionals, herbal cosmetics, to promote nature friendly health food, herbal drinks and provide a common platform for buyers and sellers to meet each other.

The symposium will be conducted in English medium and includes five technical sessions. Each session will have keynote speech, theme lecture, introductive lecture, closing remarks and interactive discussion.

The fifth IEEE e-Science conference will be held in Oxford, UK from Dec 9-11. The meeting coincides with the UK e-Science All Hands Meeting that will be held from Dec 7-9th, 2009.

Scientific research is increasingly carried out by communities of researchers that span disciplines, laboratories, organizations, and national boundaries.

The e-Science 2009 conference is designed to bring together leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of e-Science applications and enabling IT technologies. The conference serves as a forum to present the results of the latest research and product/tool developments and to highlight related activities from around the world.

Building on the successes of previous meetings, we would like to develop some key themes at the conference. These include:

2.      Bioinformatics and Health
3.      Physical Sciences and Engineering

In the context of the completion of Phase 2 of the JISC Digitisation Programme² the JISC Digital Content Conference aims to discuss and decide the next steps that need to be taken to ensure the sustained integration of digitised content into research and education and is one of the most important events of 2009. It will consider the issues facing the UK’s universities as they deal with creating, delivering, sustaining and using a whole range of digital content as well as looking into future opportunities and challenges. Theme and scope:

Wireless networks have experienced an explosive growth during the past few
years. Nowadays, there is a large variety of networks spanning from the
well-known cellular networks to non-infrastructure wireless networks such
as mobile ad hoc networks and sensor networks. The security issue is a
central concern for achieving secured communication in these networks. This
one day workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from
wireless and sensor networking, security, privacy, cryptography, and distributed
computing communities, with the goals of promoting discussions and
collaborations. We are interested in novel research on all aspects of
security and privacy in wireless and sensor networks and their cost-effective
solutions.

Topics of interest:

We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions
addressing various aspects of secured wireless/sensor networks. Topics of
interest include, but are not limited to:

· Attacks and Countermeasures
· Authentication and Access Control
· Computer-Aided Tool for Security
· Cross-layer Design for Security

Paper Submission:

Submit a full paper of about 6 pages (IEEE two column, single-spaced format),
including figures and references, using 10 font size, and number each page.
Each submitted paper will be peer reviewed and the comments will be provided
to the authors. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings
of the MASS’09.

Use the Author Guidelines available at conference website
(http://www.cs.cityu.edu.hk/mass09/submitguide.shtml). Prepare your papers
in PDF file only (Adobe format), paper title, names, affiliations, postal
address, and e-mail address of the authors, about 100-150 word abstract,
and at most five keywords.

Submit your paper to EDAS (http://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=7461). Submission
of a paper should be regarded as an undertaking that, should the paper be
accepted, at least one of the authors will attend the workshop to present
the work. A full conference registration is needed and will include the
ability to attend any workshop and regular conference session.

4th INCLUSIVA-NET MEETING: P2P NETWORKS AND PROCESSES

Event dates: July 6 to 10, 2009 in Medialab-Prado (Madrid, Spain)

Medialab-Prado issues a call for the presentation of papers to be publicly presented during the 4th International Inclusiva-net Meeting. This edition will focus on an analysis of â€œpeer-to-peerâ€ networks and network processes, highlighting the social potentials of cooperative systems and processes based on the structures and dynamics inherent to these types of networks.

Selected papers will be presented within a program that will also include invited lecturers and debates.
Selected works will be published at the Medialab-Prado website and they will be included in an e-book (Spanish/English). The final versions of the texts must not exceed 5.500 words.

Many topics will be addressed such as P2P networks as a way of democratizing access to culture, legal issues and controversies, educational and artistic applications, their role in the emergent countries, as well as other perspectives that make a broader reflection on P2P networks possible.

“Ovation 09” Toastmasters International Annual Conference

Toastmasters International is a worldwide organization with its presence in 91 countries through 10,500 clubs and over 225,000 members. Toastmasters are committed to the development of communication and leadership skills at all levels in “people development”. Oral communication, public speaking, presentation skills and leadership are the focal areas of learning in this organization.

Toastmasters Clubs in Sri Lanka have joined hands with the clubs in India to form District 82 of Toastmasters International, comprising of around 140 clubs in total. District 82 will hold its first conference in Sri Lanka between 22nd and 24th May 2009 with the attendance of the incoming World President of Toastmasters International, Ms. Pat Johnson. She, together with an eminent faculty of Toastmasters from India and Sri Lanka will conduct the educational workshops for both Toastmasters and the general public. The inauguration of the 3 day event is scheduled to take place at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo on the 22nd May 2009, with the educational sessions to follow on the 23rd at Mount Lavinia Hotel in Mount Lavinia.

Sri Lanka Convention Bureau forms a part of the organizing committee as this is considered to be a nationally important event to Sri Lanka.

23rd Asia Area Convention of Y’s Men International

Y’s Men International is a world-wide fellowship of persons of all faiths working constructively together, based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, in partnership with and supporting the YMCA. Its mission is to strive through active service to develop, encourage and provide leadership to build a better world for all humankind. Y’s Men International Sri Lanka Division is organizing the 23rd Asia Area Convention in Sri Lanka from 31st July to 2nd August 2009 in Colombo, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Convention Bureau.

A parallel Youth Convocation will be held at the same time in Mount Lavinia and an International Council Meeting at Wadduwa. The grand item in the agenda is the Installation of Area President Dr. Chon Byung-koo for year 2009/2010 by the International President Kevin Cummins at the Convention. Two special features will be the opportunity given to all delegates to conduct devotions in their own language at various times during the event and the conducting of the Sunday morning service at the Church next door to the venue.

Registration will be online and can be accessed from www.srilankaysmen.org. And SriLankan Airlines will fly the delegates as the official carrier for the event.
